Will a Nimitz-class carrier serve longer than USS Enterprise CVN-65?
Short answerIt could approach or exceed Enterprise's lifespan, but refueling and aging costs determine whether extending service is worthwhile.
NotesNimitz was already more than fifty years from launch at the time of the discussion, placing the class close to Enterprise's exceptional longevity. Her 1998-2001 refuelling overhaul set the practical limit for another extension. Keeping the ship beyond the arrival of a replacement would require another costly reactor decision and continued maintenance of an ageing nuclear carrier. Preservation is technically imaginable, but a suitable berth, federal support, radiological work, land value, and operating costs make a museum future extraordinarily difficult.
