A World War II generation designs a Cold War carrier

See why the Nimitz class translated World War II and Vietnam-era experience into a repeatable nuclear supercarrier rather than another one-off Enterprise.

Notes

The class began in the 1960s under officers whose professional formation came from World War II, while its operating assumptions reflected Vietnam and the Cold War. The first ship was expected to reach fifty years of commissioned service in 2025, so the class remains an evolving force rather than a closed historical artifact. The ten-ship Nimitz program took the exceptional but costly USS Enterprise as its starting point. Its decisive achievement was making nuclear supercarrier power affordable enough to build in numbers. The comparison with Britain’s Revenge class makes the same point: repeatable capital ships made an opponent’s answer more expensive than a singular prestige design could.
