Night navigation and the cost of mines

Force K's night-raiding advantages also exposed it to minefields, while losses of different ship types carried different replacement consequences.

Notes

At night near hostile waters, a force could encounter an unseen minefield before it found an enemy squadron. Fast, aggressive manoeuvre was one of Force K's strengths, but imperfect navigation could turn that operating style into a severe hazard. The acceptable level of wartime risk also depended on force structure and replacement capacity. Destroyers and Dido-class cruisers were already being built in numbers, whereas the older Leander-type cruiser role lacked a direct production successor, making losses politically and materially different.
