Jutland makes night aviation a British priority

The German fleet's night escape after Jutland pushed the Royal Navy to invest heavily in difficult carrier night operations between the wars.

Notes

The proposed British attack uses about three waves launched at night. Night flying and carrier operations demanded infrastructure, training time and acceptance of additional risk. The Royal Navy's concentration on those capabilities is traced to the German fleet's escape in darkness after Jutland. American and Japanese aviation had some night capability, but it received less priority than in Britain. The resulting counterfactual places the British attack at roughly 02:00 or 03:00 on a Sunday morning, when opposing fighters would be unlikely to be airborne.
