New Zealand cruisers and the Geddes Axe opportunity

An earlier New Zealand cruiser squadron could have recruited experienced sailors released by British cuts and accelerated local naval development.

Notes

New Zealand was an exposed island with a small population and a strategic preference for naval rather than large ground contributions to Far Eastern defence. It eventually fielded a cruiser squadron that became the core of the Royal New Zealand Navy, and the program could have begun much earlier. The Geddes Axe created a pool of experienced Royal Navy personnel whom New Zealand might have recruited. Such transfers would have brought sailors, families, and technical skills as well as ships. The missed opportunity therefore joined maritime defence to immigration and institutional development.
