Chapter ยท 35:31-37:43

New Orleans fights across the Pacific and returns for occupation duty

New Orleans fought from Coral Sea through Tassafaronga, returned after losing her bow, and finished the war with seventeen battle stars.

Notes

New Orleans fought at Coral Sea, Midway, the Eastern Solomons, and Tassafaronga, where a torpedo tore away her entire bow. After repairs she bombarded Wake Island and supported attacks in the Marshall Islands. At war's end she operated off China and Korea, covering the internment of Japanese ships at Tsingtao and the evacuation of Allied prisoners of war. She returned to Philadelphia for decommissioning, remained in reserve until 1959, and was then sold for scrap. Her seventeen battle stars placed her among the most decorated US ships of the Second World War. One destroyer and four destroyer escorts were later named for New Orleans sailors killed in action.
