Neptune's design was already advanced when Jellicoe took over, leaving room for limited changes before ordering. He requested improvements to armor and subdivision, with more of his suggestions incorporated into the following Colossus class. These ships remained compatible with the first dreadnought generation while testing superfiring turrets aft and seeking greater firepower. Their wing turrets still attracted criticism, and their limited scope for improvement fell short of the ships Jellicoe wanted to build.
