As Nelson moved into strategic command, he began creating opportunities for younger officers much as senior patrons had once done for him. After capturing the Spanish frigate Santa Sabina, he placed Lieutenants John Culverhouse and Thomas Hardy in command. They used the prize to draw pursuing Spanish ships away from Nelson's Minerve and were themselves captured. Nelson secured their release soon afterward, allowing both men to rejoin him for Cape St Vincent and illustrating how professional loyalty and patronage reinforced one another.
