Chapter ยท 3:56-7:12

Nelson's zero-to-one-hundred command temperament

Nelson's all-or-nothing intensity made him formidable in war, difficult in peace, and vulnerable to overconfidence until he learned from failure.

Notes

The easy division between a brilliant admiral and a man who was simply bad at politics or personal affairs does not fit Nelson's career. He could be capable and clumsy in every sphere because he was a developing human commander, not a fixed legend. Repeated amphibious experience eventually encouraged the overconfidence behind a major failure, but he recognized the mistake and adjusted later. His tendency to operate at either complete intensity or near inactivity explains both his wartime value and his poor fit for routine peacetime command.
