The contested letter used to defend the slave trade

A partially published letter attributed to Nelson is assessed through its uncertain authorship, missing prompt, and later use in a pro-slavery campaign.

Notes

The letter was already known: a friend published only part of it years after Nelson's death while campaigning to preserve the slave trade. The original message that supposedly prompted Nelson's reply is unknown, and the complete reply was not printed. Those gaps leave both authorship and context open to examination. Its publication history shows why historians must ask who selected a document, what was omitted, and what political purpose the selection served.
