Nelson, Rodney, and Hood: the message a ship name sends

Capital-ship names can project strength, while a ship sent abroad on a diplomatic cruise needs associations suited to that mission.

Notes

When Britain could build only two battleships to help secure the peace, Nelson and Rodney supplied unmistakable associations with formidable naval command. Their names were meant to remind foreign audiences of what the Royal Navy could do when required. Hood's voyage around the world called for a different kind of reputation, one that could support a diplomatic mission as well as display naval power. Drake was even more famous as a world-ranging maritime figure, but his name carried less helpful diplomatic associations.
