Chapter ยท 0:01-5:12

Navigation as a scarce professional skill

Why navigation was once a specialised, expensive skill that shaped a sailor's responsibilities and prospects.

Notes

The opening frames navigation as a history of changing methods and changing navigators, rather than a practical tutorial. Early navigators could appear almost magical because instruments such as compasses turned hidden natural forces into usable directions. In the age of sail, only a small part of a ship's company could navigate competently, while lieutenants faced navigation examinations and midshipmen learned the skill as part of their training. A sextant was valuable equipment, so the ability and tools to navigate could affect who safely took command of a captured vessel, brought the prize home, and advanced a naval career.
