What navalized merchant construction actually meant

The Flower hulls borrowed merchant practice for economy but retained naval strengthening where minesweeping and escort work demanded it.

Notes

A navalized merchant standard was different from ordering an unmodified commercial vessel. Mines posed a greater World War I danger than torpedoes in this account, so economical construction still had to provide the strength and seakeeping required for minesweeping. Commercial forms and savings could be used where suitable, while naval strengthening and mission-specific systems remained where operations demanded them. A later landing-platform-helicopter designed partly to move 3 Commando Brigade to Norway accepted commercial practice in selected areas because planners expected a dangerous Cold War mission, yet it still incorporated naval requirements elsewhere. The same distinction prevents the Flower sloops' economy from being mistaken for the absence of warship standards.
