How navies tested guns, shells, and armour

Historical naval weapons trials focused on penetration, hole size, range, and progressively more demanding armour targets.

Question

What metrics were used to test naval weapons?

Short answer

Testing examined whether a weapon penetrated a given armor target, the damage it produced, and the range at which it could do so, with targets made progressively harder.

Notes

At its most direct, the test asks whether a weapon can make a hole in a specified thickness of armour and at what distance. Increasing the density and thickness of test targets reveals the limits of a shell or gun. Greater discretionary funding under the Third Sea Lord could have supported a denser programme of ammunition, shell, and armour trials in the early twentieth century. Such experiments mattered because their results fed back into ordnance, protection, and ship-design decisions.
