Naval wargames need operational space for battlecruisers

Compressed game maps favor direct gun battles and conceal the geographic room a Lexington-type battlecruiser needs to exploit speed, range, and fast-response missions.

Notes

World of Warships illustrates a modeling problem without turning game results into historical evidence. The game's map scale must compress distance for technical and playability reasons, but that compression narrows the room in which a battlecruiser can avoid or pursue an opponent. Direct gun combat then becomes more prominent than economic warfare, reconnaissance, or fast response across an ocean. A larger operational map would better reveal why Lexington's speed and range might have been exceptionally useful in an Atlantic or Pacific war. The example shows why a simulation's scale must match the historical role being tested.
