Hospitality aboard a foreign warship gives visiting officers opportunities to assess its fighting capability. A visitor can count the 4.7-inch guns, judge the torpedoes' size, and observe other weapons. The crew's appearance and proficiency with those weapons offer evidence of readiness. Dinners and music can accompany close professional observation of the ship and its people.
