Could the RNAS have deployed the first tanks?

If the Army had not taken control, the first tanks might have gone to the Western Front with Royal Naval Air Service armoured-car formations.

Notes

The counterfactual begins from an actual institutional possibility: the landships could have deployed as part of Royal Naval Air Service armoured-car formations. That would have placed Army-style land forces inside the air arm of the naval service. Because the RNAS already operated armoured-vehicle units, the organizational path was plausible even though the outcome is alternate history. Naval ownership might then have shaped which personnel deployed the vehicles and the guns fitted to them. Service ownership was a real variable in the development of the new technology.
