Stealth as one contributor to naval surprise

Hull and superstructure shaping will remain useful, but it is a means to surprise rather than a complete answer to warship survivability.

Question

Will naval stealth remain important, or will instability make it obsolete?

Short answer

Stealth shaping is likely to remain because surprise matters, but it will not be the be-all and end-all of naval warfare.

Notes

Reduced-signature hull and superstructure shaping will probably remain part of warship design. It belongs within the much older military pursuit of surprise rather than representing a wholly new kind of warfare. Lower observability can make detection and targeting harder, but it does not decide an engagement by itself. Stealth is one useful design contribution among weapons, sensors, tactics, and other survivability measures rather than the whole answer to naval combat.
