Naval service carried substantial domestic costs. Officers spent years fighting wars and travelling, leaving little time to form relationships within polite society. A prospective spouse faced long separations and the possibility that an officer might return wealthy, penniless, disabled or not at all. Men who came of age almost entirely among shipmates could also lack experience of civilian social expectations. Nelson's marriage and later relationship with Emma Hamilton were unusual rather than representative of most officers' lives.
