Jackie Hayward recalls volunteering on short notice, flying by Hercules through Uruguay, and realizing from the armed reception that she was entering a war. A signal misunderstanding meant a smaller hospital ship expected thirteen men but received three women, after which they transferred by helicopter to Uganda. Hayward says they were the first female naval nurses aboard Uganda since the Second World War. Uganda entered Falkland Sound by day to receive casualties and returned at night to the Red Cross Box, the agreed safe area where hospital vessels rendezvoused.
