Captains gained direct access to the king through interpreters

The second article required interviews with visiting British captains and confined interpreters to translating.

Notes

A visiting British warship captain could request an interview after giving proper notice of its purpose. Each side could bring a competent interpreter, whose role was strictly limited to interpreting. Judd could therefore have attended as the king's interpreter, with Simpson interpreting for Paulet. That arrangement would have allowed the king to hear the captain's complaints directly. The distinction between translating and conducting negotiations addressed the earlier dispute over using Judd as an intermediary.
