Chapter ยท 1:41-3:00

Naval gunnery depended on more than the gun barrel

A naval gun's effectiveness depends on the moving ship, the target, the mounting, and the fire-control problem as much as on the weapon itself.

Notes

Naval gunnery is a linked engineering problem. A well-made barrel and breech are of limited use if a ship is rolling, the mount is moving, or the target is changing course. The gun's apparent movement combines the ship's forward motion, pitch and roll, the mounting's angle, and the target's own movement. Ranging and stabilising therefore connect weapons design to hull motion, aiming, and the many mechanisms that turn a shell into a useful hit.
