The useful comparison is not simply the nominal calibre of a land howitzer and a naval gun. Existing 5-inch weapons can reach similar ranges, and guided or rocket-assisted projectiles can extend their value without transplanting a land turret. The railgun programme offers a warning, because performance advanced faster than barrel metallurgy and produced unacceptable wear. A durable larger naval gun therefore needs a long-term path for shells, barrels, factories, and materials rather than a single impressive demonstrator.

Modern naval gun range depends on shells and barrel metallurgy
Modern 5-inch and 155-millimetre ranges lead into the railgun barrel problem and show why ammunition and metallurgy shape a gun programme.
