Gun calibre does not define a battlecruiser

Hull protection, speed, and intended employment define the ship type; gun calibre alone does not turn a battleship into a battlecruiser.

Notes

Fifteen-inch guns do not determine whether a ship is a battlecruiser or a battleship. Classification follows the overall design and intended role, especially the balance among protection, speed, and firepower. Fourteen-inch guns sit at the entry level for Second World War battleships, 15-inch weapons remain fully practical, 16-inch guns are desirable, and 18-inch weapons are exceptional. The passage provides a compact way to separate armament fashion from the deeper architecture of a capital ship.
