Why a naval 5-inch gun is too large for a normal tank

A cross-domain weapon answer contrasts nominal caliber with the real size of a naval gun system.

Question

Could a naval 5-inch gun be adapted into a universal artillery and tank weapon on land?

Short answer

It is technically possible, but the vehicle needed to carry the naval gun and ammunition would grow far beyond the scale normally desired for a tank.

Notes

The naval weapon's barrel, breech, recoil forces, and ammunition impose a much larger installation than the caliber number alone suggests. A later comparison contrasts a roughly 29.5-foot naval 5-inch weapon with an M1 tank gun installation of about 18 feet. The naval gun unit is put near 21.7 tons, roughly a third of the stated mass of an entire M1A2 tank. A specialized artillery vehicle might carry it, but an ordinary tank would have to become substantially larger and heavier. The adaptation conflicts with the mobility and size requirements of armored warfare.
