British and French troops advanced with energy, but the expedition lacked enough artillery, air support and supplies. Royal Navy destroyers provided the army's air defence and fire support. Other campaigns drew attention and resources away from Central Norway. The shortage also reflected decisions to commit forces early in the war before working out how to supply them.
