From Fisher and Beresford to Beatty and Jellicoe: containing naval factionalism

Fisher and Beresford repeated the factional damage of Keppel and Palliser, while Beatty and Jellicoe exercised greater restraint.

Notes

The Fisher-Beresford dispute shocked a Royal Navy that believed it had outgrown the factional damage seen in the eighteenth century. The later tensions surrounding Beatty and Jellicoe ended differently. Whatever their operational disagreements, Beatty and Jellicoe refused to let them become a comparable public factional struggle. Professional restraint among senior officers protected institutional effectiveness as well as personal reputation.
