The Dreadnought Age did not instantly remove pre-dreadnoughts, some of which remained in service into the 1930s. HMS Victory was already forty years old at Trafalgar, illustrating that long service lives were normal even before industrial warships. HMS Warrior likewise ceased to be a front-line ironclad yet retained value for cruising and presence duties that freed newer ships for higher-priority work. A design can therefore be obsolete for one task while remaining economical and effective for another.
