Chapter · 24:11-30:14

Naval aviation begins as an information system

Balloon carriers extend a fleet's sight and help acquire, share, and exploit information before aircraft become strike weapons.

Notes

The earliest naval-air role was reconnaissance: seeing enemy movement, photographing positions, and spotting the fall of shot. Balloon carriers raised observers above a ship's own limited horizon and turned height into usable tactical information. Information warfare depends on what a fleet knows, what the enemy knows, and how quickly either side can share that knowledge. Mass literacy and modern communications expanded the audience able to receive and circulate information rather than creating the contest itself. The first side to publish battlefield imagery can shape the public narrative, sometimes before it understands the event fully. Aircraft changed the speed and reach of that contest, but not its basic importance to command at sea.
