Using naval architects' transactions for design history

Papers published by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects can provide unusually direct evidence of how contemporary designers understood a ship.

Notes

The Transactions of the Institution of Naval Architects can contain detailed reports on individual ships or classes. They do not cover every vessel. Their catalogues and digital holdings can reveal where contemporary technical discussion survives. When a paper is available, it preserves a naval architect's perspective at or near the time of design and construction.
