Chapter · 3:54-5:50

The geographic scale of naval air defence

City, regional and ocean areas provide a way to compare how much sea successive air-defence systems can cover.

Notes

Naval air defence has to protect forces operating across large expanses of sea. Comparisons with New York City, Greater London and New York State give a sense of the areas involved as weapon ranges increase. The Atlantic supplies a further reference for the largest areas discussed. These comparisons prepare the distinction between defending an individual ship and providing coverage across a much wider operating area.
