National roles shape destroyer design

A destroyer optimized for fleet protection, offensive attack, or general-purpose duties will make different tradeoffs in guns, torpedoes, anti-submarine warfare, and minelaying.

Notes

A destroyer suited to one navy may be a poor fit for another because each navy assigns it different duties. A fleet using destroyers chiefly as a shield may emphasize gun firepower. A navy treating them chiefly as an offensive spear may give torpedoes greater weight. A navy seeking general-purpose ships may add anti-submarine and minelaying capabilities alongside guns and torpedoes. National requirements can therefore lead to different choices even within the same generation.
