Define the nation before designing its warships

Warship procurement begins with geography, economic reach, overseas responsibilities, alliance roles, and an honest judgment of national capacity.

Notes

Warship planning begins with an honest assessment of the country buying the fleet. Geography, trade, dispersed territories, population, and technical capacity establish what the state can sustain. The British example challenges both exaggerated imperial ambitions and the dismissal of a large, research-intensive economy as insignificant. Alliance commitments then determine whether the navy must lead, support, or provide logistics as well as combat power. Those responsibilities establish the requirements for individual ships.
