Why national prestige may revive a status-ship programme

Russia may eventually pursue a Lider or another large surface combatant because the loss of a visible great-power presence could become politically intolerable.

Notes

The expected return of a Russian status-ship programme remains a prediction, not a report of an approved design. The forecast is that Russia will build something for the role, although the eventual ship need not be the Lider. National ego supplies the proposed motive: losing visible great-power presence would undermine the state's self-image and create political pressure to act. Prestige could therefore help revive procurement as well as define the ship's mission.
