The naval fighting at Narvik began with Norwegian ships defending the port and losing ships and lives. In this account, unclear rules of engagement and poor government advice left their crews with difficult conditions in which to resist. The later British-German actions involved Warburton Lee's destroyers and then a force including HMS Warspite and Tribal-class destroyers. Counting the Norwegian defence alongside those two actions produces the three-battle sequence argued for here. HMS Eskimo's lost bow belongs to that later destroyer fighting and supplies the preceding example of surviving severe forward damage.

Including Norway's defence in the battles of Narvik
Counting Norway's initial defence alongside the later British-German actions gives its losses and difficult rules of engagement a place in the Narvik sequence.
