Narvik exposes destroyer firepower trade-offs

Narvik shows why oversized guns could make German destroyers look powerful while leaving them less stable and less accurate than better-balanced opponents.

Notes

The German losses at Narvik damaged more than fleet numbers: experienced crews were killed or shaken after an elite force was trapped and overwhelmed. The defeat also exposes a design contrast between German destroyers built as miniature cruisers and British Tribals built around destroyer-sized weapons. A larger gun promises more damage when it hits, but its accuracy depends more heavily on the stability of the firing platform. The same relationship appears in British light cruisers, where too much armament for a hull can make long-range shooting harder to control. Standardising German destroyers by flotilla would improve consistency, but it would not remove the underlying need to balance gun power against hull behaviour.
