Napoleon misreads naval artillery as land artillery

Napoleon's artillery expertise encouraged a misleading view of sea battles as flat, static contests decided mainly by gun numbers.

Notes

Napoleon tended to interpret naval warfare through his land-artillery experience. That model neglected maneuvering gun platforms, changing angles, waves, and the sea's constantly shifting surface. Naval artillery could not be reduced to rolling up the largest number of guns and winning a stationary duel. The mistake was treating a moving, rolling platform as though it were a battery on level ground.
