Napoleon's blind spots in economics, logistics, and sea power

A critical comparison of Napoleon and interwar dictators separates military ability from an understanding of economics, logistics, and sea power.

Notes

In this interpretation, Napoleon was a capable general whose statecraft suffered from poor logistics and a weak understanding of sea power. His grasp of economic reality was a particularly serious weakness. The dictators emerging in the 1920s and 1930s showed even less economic understanding. German economic pressure is offered as one explanation for the timing of war, although its leaders may not have recognised that pressure themselves. Britain still had to plan for their actions despite doubts about their understanding of the economies they governed.
