Namsos repeated the interwar amphibious lessons

At Namsos, Adrian Carton de Wiart and Peter Fleming confronted the same unloading, fire-support, and air-cover problems already reported in 1924.

Notes

At Namsos, Major-General Adrian Carton de Wiart's force, with Peter Fleming as a senior staff officer, exposed how landing craft fitted inside a combined operation. Troops needed to come ashore quickly with their equipment while ships supplied fire support. Air defence remained fragile. HMS Glorious came unusually close and, in this account, its aircraft supplied the campaign's only day of carrier cover. Landed 40 mm guns and Tribal-class destroyers carried much of the burden otherwise. The campaign reports repeat essentially the same requirements found in the 1924 exercise findings, showing that wartime failure confirmed problems already identified between the wars.
