Admiral Pavel Nakhimov and Vice Admiral Fedor Novosilsky filled complementary command roles. Nakhimov led the fleet into action and later died after a sniper wounded him during the defense of Sevastopol. His death, followed by a Soviet film about him in 1947, gave him a much larger memorial reputation. Novosilsky survived the war and attracted less heroic attention, but he trained and prepared the fleet that Nakhimov took into battle.
