Najaden trusts confined waters to deter Dictator

Najaden's captain twice relies on difficult navigation to protect a frigate that cannot match Dictator at range.

Notes

Najaden was built from sound starboard timbers salvaged from an unfinished ship of the line damaged in the 1807 occupation of Copenhagen. Her frigate battery and carronades left her at a disadvantage against Dictator in a fight at range. Her captain initially trusted the archipelago's difficult navigation to prevent a British attack and went ashore after dining aboard another vessel. From the hills he saw British ships already inside the archipelago and hurried back to order a retreat along an inner route toward Lyngør. After withdrawing farther into the sound, he again assumed Dictator would decline to follow. That second assumption repeated a judgment the British advance had already disproved.
