Naiad sends naval manpower into colonial campaigns ashore

Naiad's crews served in naval brigades during the South African and Somaliland campaigns before the cruiser became a minelayer.

Notes

Naiad supported the Second Boer War by landing 117 officers and sailors for naval-brigade service in Cape Colony. She then operated through the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean and participated in the Somaliland campaign, for which her crew received 285 medals and clasps. The career shows how a globally deployed cruiser supplied trained armed manpower ashore as well as guns and presence afloat. Her later conversion to a minelayer demonstrates how the same adaptable hull could move from expeditionary manpower to specialist wartime support.
