The system that produced Nagumo

Nagumo's detail-oriented, doctrine-led command style fit Japan's expected attrition campaign but proved poorly matched to the fast-moving carrier war that emerged.

Notes

Nagumo mentored junior officers, supported their promotion, and maintained a patronage network. His detailed planning suited the controlled attrition campaign Japan had spent years preparing to fight. Japan's restricted exercise resources gave officers fewer opportunities to prepare for a fluid war through open fleet exercises. At Midway, changing information and concern about weapon effectiveness helped produce his disastrous rearming decisions. His appointment and conduct therefore need to be understood alongside the doctrine, training, and command system that produced him.
