Chapter · 20:22-24:52

Overseas study, China service, and teaching

Travel in Europe and America, gunboat duty in China, and academy instruction broadened Nagumo beyond his destroyer specialty before senior command.

Notes

Promoted to commander in 1924, Nagumo spent 1925 and 1926 studying tactics and technology in Western Europe and the United States. His persistent questioning gave him direct knowledge of possible opponents and their naval technology. China postings aboard Saga and Uji added diplomatic experience, followed by academy instruction from 1927 to 1929. Promotion to captain in November 1929 brought command of Naka and the 11th Destroyer Division in 1930-31. This was a peak assignment for a destroyer specialist, since further promotion would require commanding mixed forces as a generalist. Administrative duties after 1931 broadened his understanding of the navy before further sea commands.
