Mussolini's fall would not automatically weaken Hitler at home

The two dictatorships rested on different institutions, grievances, and levels of internal control, so Italian collapse does not transfer mechanically to Germany.

Question

Would an early fall of Mussolini threaten Hitler's security as a dictator?

Short answer

Probably not; Hitler controlled a stronger party-state and security apparatus, and Mussolini's failure might even make the German regime look stronger by comparison.

Notes

Hitler's dictatorship is assessed as much stronger in its organization, bureaucracy, and suppression of internal resistance than Mussolini's. Germany's perceived destruction under the Versailles settlement also supplied a stronger grievance than Italy's belief that it had missed promised rewards. An early fall of Mussolini is therefore not expected to threaten Hitler's security. It might instead reinforce the impression that Hitler was the more effective dictator.
