Museum ships preserve more than hardware

HMCS Haida and surviving Canadian and Australian corvettes show how preserved ships carry national, industrial, and corporate memories into later generations.

Notes

The survival of HMCS Haida gives Canada a physical link to the fighting reputation of its Tribal-class destroyers. A surviving Flower-class corvette likewise anchors Canadian memory of the Battle of the Atlantic. Two of the sixty Australian-built Bathurst-class corvettes survive, one afloat and one preserved ashore. The vessels record the scale and geographic reach of wartime domestic shipbuilding. A mining company helped bring the land-based ship back even though ship construction was no longer its business. The act kept the company's contribution to defending maritime trade inside its own institutional memory as well as the nation's.
