Alex Clarke recalls meeting excellent museum staff and exceptional volunteers during visits in Canada and the United States. A minority of staff in public-facing roles seemed less engaged with the subject. At one museum ship, he answered questions from someone he assumed was new, then learned from the volunteer team leader that the employee had worked there for about two years. He stresses that the vast majority of the staff he met were excellent. Knowledgeable colleagues and visitors can help people who initially regard museum work as an ordinary assignment find an interest in the history.
