A multirole aircraft squeezed between specialists

Sea Vixen interceptors and Buccaneer attack aircraft outperformed the Scimitar in specialist roles, even though it remained a strong all-rounder.

Notes

The Scimitar could handle several missions well, but dedicated aircraft could beat it within a narrow specialty. The Sea Venom and Sea Vixen were better interceptors, while the Buccaneer took over the attack role. The later F/A-18 illustrates the same tradeoff: it carried bombs less effectively than the A-6 Intruder and intercepted less effectively than the F-14 Tomcat, yet it offered useful flexibility. The Scimitar reflected an older Royal Navy requirement for all-round aircraft that could work from small air groups distributed across many survivable carriers. That requirement links interwar carrier policy with the multirole aircraft that later became common. The type also lost 39 aircraft in accidents, about half the production run, which weighed heavily against its versatility.
