Four aircraft families simplify a global air arm

The Royal Navy seeks a small set of multi-role carrier and shipborne aircraft to reduce the maintenance and supply burden of worldwide operations.

Notes

Supporting many specialized aircraft types on the other side of the world imposed a large burden of spares, training, and maintenance. The Navy had already experienced the complexity of operating numerous designs together and sought to compress the future fleet into roughly four aircraft families. Multi-role torpedo-spotter-reconnaissance and fighter-reconnaissance aircraft accepted compromises in exchange for simpler global support. A dedicated fighter and a shipborne reconnaissance type completed the proposed mix. This logistical logic helps explain the movement toward multi-role aircraft, although combined designs still carried tactical compromises.
