Why do Tillman-style six-gun super-turrets create so many problems?
Short answerThey are an engineering and operating dead end because their interacting mechanisms multiply problems far faster than they add useful firepower.
NotesA multi-gun turret does not add isolated barrels: each weapon shares loading, ammunition supply, structure, training, elevation, and control systems with the others. The rule of thumb used here treats each added gun as rapidly multiplying the possible failure and coordination problems. By the time a mounting reaches six guns, the mechanisms and crew interactions create far more than six times the trouble of a single-gun installation. The paper concentration of firepower therefore offers no convincing maintenance, logistics, or operational advantage.
